Uganda is one of the poorest nations in the world, with 37.7 percent of the population living on less than $1.25 a day. Despite making enormous progress in reducing the countrywide poverty incidence from 56 percent of the population in 1992 to 31 per cent in 2005, poverty remains deep-rooted in the country’s rural areas, which are home to more than 85 percent of Ugandans.
After a military coup in 1971, the president was deposed from power and the dictator Idi Amin seized control of the country. Amin ruled Uganda with the military for the next eight years and was responsible for mass killings within the country to maintain his rule. It is estimated that over 300,000 Ugandans lost their lives at the hands of his regime. Basically Amin left the country’s economy in ruins.
The rule of Idi Amin and the effects of the HIV virus left thousands of children orphaned with nowhere to live or with no one to provide for them. Several of our Open Bible churches started orphanages to provide for these displaced children and not only feed and clothe them but also to teach them the Word of God and provide a good education for them. You can partner with us in supporting these orphanages, which are literally saving children who would be living on the street and providing them with proper shelter and food.
With the orphan population growing in epidemic proportions, there is an immediate need for orphan care around the world. Moving away from traditional and institutional orphanages, through the work of our missionaries and national leaders, we offer a fresh and dynamic approach to confront the orphan problem where Open Bible churches serve.
Each home is an extension of the pastor’s family with an atmosphere based on love and compassion that is taught in the Word of God. Every home shares a building with the local Open Bible church. The children live on the top level with the pastor and His family. The ground level is where the church and community meet. Each home has the capacity to house 20 children.
We believe loving and taking care of orphans is a true testimony of the love of Christ. This unique church/home combination provides an effective means to meeting both the spiritual and physical needs of each child as well as addressing the felt needs of the community.
